Exploring Digital Culture

Entries by a MOOC participant

I am participating in an online class — eLearning and Digital Cultures — through Coursera and the University of Edinburgh as an experiment in teaching and learning. Having been a technology director in Northwest Colorado for many years, our schools were always looking for ways to expand the learning horizons for our teachers and students.

Recently, I read Tom Van der Ark’s book: “Getting Smarter: How Digital Learning is Changing the World.” He predicts that by 2020, high school students will be taking half of their classes online. My reaction? Teachers need to be trained to effectively use the medium so that the experience can be engaging and stimulating for the students.

Have you read Netsmart by Howard Rheingold? I just gave a copy to the Technology teacher at my son’s school. Great book! Am adding Van der Ark to my list now.

I have not. However, I did see that Rheingold is leading a NetSmart MOOC http://mooc.wikispaces.com/rheingold. I am too consumed by this MOOC to participate at this time, but have him bookmarked for the future. I saw your posts during the TwitterChat last nite and wanted to connect. It was Midnight my time and I decided to pass, as I have been getting up around 4AM to participate with others in EDCMOOC. Thanks for the comment on my blog!
